FAQs
We take sustainability and care for our environment very seriously!
We want our cutting garden to be a haven for wildlife, and aim to leave the soil healthier each year. We therefore choose to grow our flowers using organic methods, permaculture principles and no-dig. We NEVER use any pesticides or chemicals, and avoid peat.
HOW DO YOU AVOID PEAT?
I make my own compost and leaf mould for mulching growing beds, and supplement with only peat free, soil association accredited compost.
For perennials, I buy bare roots to avoid plants grown in peat, and I grow everything from seed as many garden centres and nurseries sell plug plants grown in peat
HOW DO YOU ENCOURAGE WILDLIFE?
I leave flowers for pollinators, have a large wild area on my allotment which includes habitats for different creatures, avoid any chemicals which harm wildlife, feed birds in winter (even though they eat my brassicas) and in Spring I am finally setting up my wildlife pond.
DO YOU USE CHEMICAL PESTICIDES?
Never!
I utilise companion planting, attracting beneficial insects and make sure I have plenty of spare plants for the slugs!
WHAT PACKAGING DO YOU USE?
All of our printed material is produced to high environmental & sustainable standards.
All our packaging is recyclable, compostable and/or biodegradable.
DO YOU GROW ALL OF YOUR FLOWERS?
Currently, yes everything I sell was grown at York Flower Patch
I will clearly state whether our flowers are grown just by us, or are a combined with flowers grown sustainably by local growers.
DO YOU USE CHEMICAL FERTILISERS?
We make our own compost and nettle & comfrey tea which we use to nourish our plants.
WILL YOU BE SELLING AT LOCAL MARKETS?
York Flower Patch will be selling fresh flowers at various local markets from Spring 2025. I’ll be bringing something pretty special with me so watch this space!

HOW ELSE CAN I BUY YOUR FLOWERS?
From Spring, we will have a limited amount of buckets full of beautiful blooms to arrange yourself at home (for collection)
We will also intend to have an honesty box system for bouquets made outside of market days – location to be confirmed.
CAN I BUY YOUR FLOWERS OUTSIDE OF YORK?
Unfortunately you can’t. We are currently a teeny tiny flower patch (0.007 acres of growing beds if you’re counting) so there simply aren’t enough stems for it to be worth offering nationwide delivery.
Watch this space though! I recommend signing up for our newsletter so you are the first to hear about any expansion news!
DO YOU DO EVENTS?
Currently I do not run any events or workshops. I am hoping to start later in 2025.
I have limited place and dates for private events. Get in touch with your ideas to discuss!
