About
Born out of a desire to prioritise my joy and happiness, and help other people do the same, York Flower Patch was launched in York in Spring 2025.
Hello
I am Nat. I’m a creative scientist (the grown up version of that kid that would make perfume and think she was Chanel creating the recipe for No.5).
I grow my own organic food and love getting creative in the kitchen (though I do prefer eating out and being cooked for). I spend as much time outdoors as possible: walking the dog, having a coffee in the sunshine, and gardening. I love aesthetic stationary, planning and organising, and I’m just over here trying to make the world a greener and kinder place for my daughter.
Getting allotment in 2023 changed my life. For almost 10 years I worked in human health, regulating chemicals for the government. I didn’t love being tied to my desk. And the bulk of my day to day evaluations? Well, they were for pesticides…
Wow, what a confession from an organic gardener! (I prefer the term chemical free gardener: we can chat about my feelings about pesticides approved for organic use another time!). Whilst growing my own food and flowers, I realised how my desk job didn’t align with my values. That coupled with wanting to spend more time with my family led me to quit!
Planet first
I spent almost 10 years evaluating human hazards and regulating chemicals for the government. Let’s just say I know exactly how pesticides are used, their impact on the environment and how many chemicals there are on your cut flowers! (spoiler alert, it’s too many).
Knowing all about endocrine disrupters, ecological assessments and the regulations for pesticides inspired me to grow chemical free cut flowers on a very small scale.
Working with nature, supporting wildlife and having a minimal impact on the planet is at the heart of my business. I never use chemicals or pesticides and grow peat free. I utilise no dig and minimal soil disturbance methods to care for the ecosystem below the surface.
I reduce waste wherever possible. This involves making my own compost out of green and brown waste, and minimising the use of single use products, especially plastic. Arrangements will never be created using floral foam and bouquet wrapping is either biodegradable or recyclable.
For any online sales, all packaging and printed material is compostable/recyclable.
Seasonal
I grow a selection of beautiful flowers in harmony with nature and the seasons. I am a huge advocate for buying and producing locally grown flowers, grown exactly when nature intended them to bloom. This means you can buy the freshest, best quality flowers, and choose from the biggest variety. Plus, there is a massively reduced carbon footprint!
My fresh cut flower season runs from approximately April and October. However, I will be drying and pressing a portion of these for colourful blooms for when we all need a boost during the dark, vitamin D deprived, winter months too.
I send fortnightly updates about growing and what flowers are in season so sign up for my newsletter if you want to stay up to date. I also have a section on my website all about wat flowers when for you to learn all about seasonal British blooms
Chasing joy
I try to grow as many colours and flower types as possible. There’s a huge variety packed into my tiny space because I want you all to be able to choose your favourites.
My favourite flowers are:
Dahlias, Sweet Peas, Snapdragons, Cosmos & Zinnias (unfortunately these are a favourite with the slugs too)
Reach out and tell me which flowers you love! Even better, if you have suggestions about what you want me to include in the patch in future seasons!
Together
“Gardens and flowers have a way of bringing people together” Clare Ansberry
Growing my own flowers has deepened my connection to the seasons, the environment and my community.
Five percent of my profit is committed to protecting people and the planet. I support local organisations focussed on gardening, green living, wildlife and mental health. Donations will be made annually, and I will update you here (make sure you come back and check in January 2026!)
I hope as my business grows, I can do more to volunteer and support organisations aligned to my values and interests.
